Blancco, a provider of data erasure and end-of-lifecycle solutions, has announced support of solid state drive (SSD) erasure within its family of certified data erasure products. The newly released software positions Blancco to address current and future data security and disk wipe requirements for the increasingly popular hardware category.
A rapidly growing netbook market has fueled increased use of the small, lightweight SSDs, and the trend is expected to continue. Gartner estimates that netbook sales will reach about 8 million in 2009, rising to 50 million by 2012. Because they consume half the power of high RPM hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs are also a recognised alternative in certain data centre applications for cost control and environmental reasons. The research firm iSupply finds that SSDs could potentially replace 10 percent of data centre HDDs within the next four years and up to 40 percent by 2012, resulting in massive power savings for these facilities.
“With support of data erasure for SSDs, Blancco recognises the long-term impact of SSD technology in companies that purchase netbooks for employee use and in mass storage environments like data centres,” said Kim Väisänen, CEO of Blancco. “Our data erasure products will enable safe re-use or disposal of SSDs by businesses, both in-house and with assistance from third-party information technology asset disposal (ITAD) providers, who employ our disk overwriting software.”
