HP’s $2.7 billion acquisition of 3Com was seen as a significant step towards strengthening its presence in the networking market and boosting its converged infrastructure strategy. With networking clearly becoming an integral part of HP’s overall growth strategy, the company is going out all aggressive, attacking competition on not one but two critical fronts– products and manpower.
On one hand, HP has integrated 3Com’s network switching, routing and security solutions with its existing HP ProCurve solutions . On the other front, HP has recently announced an alliance with IIIT-B and launched the HP Network University. The initiative is seen as a significant step undertaken by HP to gear up for competition by creating next-generation network professionals. Considering the networking market is marked by stiff competition, highly skewed towards 1-2 companies, the strategy of attacking on the manpower front is seen by some experts as a logical effort to garner market share.
Interestingly, India is at the epicenter of this action. Speaking exclusively to Biztech2.com, Uday Birje, Country Manager, Networking Consulting and Services, HP India said, “The launch of HP Network University is one of the first strategies in strengthening our position in the networking space in India after the 3Com acquisition and providing end-to-end networking services. This initiative proves that we do have a vision for India with this acquisition.”
According to Neelam Dhawan, MD- Sales, HP India, the 3Com acquisition was a big one for the company. With this acquisition, Dhawan feels, that it is the right time for HP to expand its footprint in the networking space.
On the product front, an area where HP is focusing its energies on is network security and is doing so using 3Com’s TippingPoint portfolio. With the integration of this portfolio, HP aims to claim the top spot in network security.
Furthering HP’s hunger to dominate the networking space is its ‘open standards’ initiative. With open standards HP is promoting a vendor agnostic platform, where solutions and products from different partners and vendors can be integrated with HP’s networking solutions and work seamlessly for next-gen network demanding technologies.
