Japan-based semiconductor player Renesas is becoming increasingly aggressive about the Indian semiconductor market. Realising the importance of India as an important outsourcing base and sales market, it plans to quadruple its sales within four years, in a bid to gain solid ground in the microcomputer unit market.
Despite a fairly low visibility in the Indian market, Renesas is committed to increasing its sales and in a step in that direction, has started outsourcing semiconductor software and hardware design to KPIT in India.
Renesas has also tied up with KPIT Cummins for its Offshore Development Centre (ODC) to strengthen its development and design capabilities. Currently, about 100 engineers are designing System-on- Chips (SoC) products for digital consumer products and analog circuits. Renesas plans to increase the count to around 500 engineers by March 2009.
Commenting on the future plans of Renesas, Satoru Ito, CEO, Renesas Technology Corporation says, “The rate of growth of semiconductor industry in India is very high and we think that it is not too late to start business in India. We are developing our business focusing on semiconductors for energy meter and color TV.”
Renesas plans to grow by extending its presence in microcomputer for UPS and two wheeler automobile segments. In the long run, the company intends to design and develop microcomputers for mobile, automobile, PC and AV business, in the process of localisation of design and fabrication.
The company is planning to expand its design activity beyond Japan and its enterprise strategy is currently focused on three main markets: mobile, automobile and digital products. Informs Satoru, “We have acquired a dominant market share in each automotive segment, including areas such as power train, safety, chassis, information processing and drive control systems. By proposing advanced technologies and approaches, and through participation in global standards organisations, Renesas contributes to automobile development for the forthcoming era.”
In the mobile phone segment and digital life style products like digital cameras, DVD players and flat display panels, Renesas has been providing a wide range of semiconductors. Says Satoru, “MCUs, LDC drivers, mixed signal ICs, SoC and System-in-Package (SiP) are the major drivers behind Renesas’ growth. While continuing to develop our global network, our goal is to become the world’s leading intelligent solution provider, contributing to our customers’ bottom lines and making life easier and better for tomorrow’s consumers.”
