In an interaction with Biztech2.com, Sumit Sood, VP- Asia & Middle East SBU, Virtusa Corporation gives his insights on how enterprises can handle data explosion and channelise it more effectively to drive organisational growth.
What challenges do CIOs face with data explosion? How can this data be converted into useful information for a company’s growth?
One of the major challenges with data explosion is to store and manage relevant data. As the number of systems increase, keeping information consistent across the enterprise is becoming a daunting task. Also, data privacy issues, laws and other inherent elements come into the picture. It is critical to have control over the data and use it to foster growth. Using information in the right way is key, which will directly translate into profit for the company. Increased focus and investment in BI is a step in the direction to solving this problem, as well as strategic planning around MDM.
What issues do CIOs face with regard to securing sensitive data?
There is a two-fold problem here. The first is criminal misuse of data and the second is accidental usage of data, especially that of customer data. One of the strategies that can be put into place to counter these is around MDM, which will ensure that data is secure in one place and less monitoring will thus be required. Some other measures that can be taken are in the areas of data scrabbling & encryption and strong access controls.
What is the level of cloud adoption in India?
Cloud computing in India is still very nascent. Private cloud will be the next big thing and organisations will leapfrog into it. After virtualisation, cloud computing is the next logical step. Public cloud will be used for peripheral systems and processes surrounding the core business.
In the SME sector, cloud computing has already caught on. For large enterprises, I see the adoption being 12-18 months away.
How can social media tools be used to manage the explosion of social content and channelise it more effectively?
In the enterprise, social media is a challenge that needs to be tackled but, on the other hand, is a good platform to get customers as well. This platform can be used to create communities to help people know how they can benefit by partnering with the company. Internally, it can help employees connect with those in the company and beyond.
