Doosan Babcock is a known player in the field of heavy engineering power generation boilers. The company also provides efficient coal powered technology and has presence in other verticals like pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals. Doosan has two manufacturing facilities at Scotland and Korea and is now coming up with one more at Vietnam.
Doosan Babcock has an office in Chennai for its Indian operations. In line with its growing Indian business, the company wanted to expand its IT operations. Doosan has deployed AT-8000S and AT-9924 series of switches in its core-networking infrastructure to run its mission critical applications.
Need For An Intelligent Network
In order to handle the business growth in India and to satisfy the growing needs of its customers, the company felt the need to expand it’s networking infrastructure. It has taken the help of HCL Infinet to deploy security solutions along with HCL.
Says Anjan Majumdar, Head IT, Doosan Babcock (India Operation), “We have Cat6 cabling solutions based on the 10G Ethernet on Copper in the core network infrastructure. We want to have the option of port mirroring, link aggregation and VLANs along with stacking, environmental monitoring and supporting the Layer 3 routings in our Fast Ethernet switches. Therefore we decided to go for switches who provide these features to us.”
Deploying Ethernet Switches
Doosan evaluated seven vendors such as Cisco, HP and some other vendors’ products through SI partners like Wipro and HCL. However, it decided to go with Allied Telesis for its cost effective solutions. Informs Majumdar, “We did the benchmarking of all products of various vendors. We decided to deploy Allied Telesis products, as these are quality products with more features, which are typically suitable for our environment. These are also rightly priced and their service delivery is very good.”
Doosan has also deployed firewall security products from Cisco. Doosan has deployed two 9924 switches at the core and six 8000S switches at the edge of the network. Along with this, the company has deployed end point security solutions for its internal and web content from Check Point.
Doosan has invested Rs 22 lakh to upgrade the network infrastructure, along with the security solutions. The deployment process took around one month; but to fine tune all the switches with normal operations, two months were required for Doosan employees. Doosan has also deployed a parallel wireless network with the help of Allied Telesis.
Network Infrastructure Running Smooth
The AT-8000S series of Ethernet switches is a managed stackable and it is also ideal for extending the port count at the edge of the network with stacking. The AT-9900 series of switches delivers performance, flexibility and reliability. These switches also incorporate a switching core that yields wire speed Layer 3 Ipv4 routing and a hardware design with dual hot-swappable power supplies. Features like link aggregation, VLANs and port mirroring are performed across the stack.
Opines Majumdar, “It is very early to comment on the benefits which we are getting from these switches, but yes I can say that my network infrastructure is running smoothly. The stacking is providing CLI based management and the dual internal hot-swappable load sharing power supplies provide space saving reliability redundancy for maximum service uptime.”
Now the network provides high availability for mission critical traffic in case of any device failure. The company is now planning to deploy two AT-9900 and eight AT-8800S series of switches from Allied Telesis.
