Indian made Hyundai Grand i10 scores a zero in the Latin NCAP crash test

The Latin NCAP subjected a Hyundai Grand i10 base variant without airbags that was made in India, to a 64kmph crash test. The results certainly aren’t encouraging. The Hyundai Grand i10 scored zero stars for grown-up occupant safety and two stars for child occupant safety, while the body-shell integrity was deemed unstable. This car is made for the Chilean market and in terms of the safety features offered, it is the identical to one sold in India.

The European version however, got a four-star rating. While the top-spec Grand i10 in India gets ABS and dual airbags as safety features, the European model gets a more stable structure along with side airbags, anti-skid technology and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). However, several other cars sold in India suffer the same problem due to the lack of sufficient crash test norms and cost cutting by the manufacturers. While there are plans to implement new mandatory crash test regulations in India, we are quite unsure of when this will finally go through.

Latin NCAP’s website had this to say: “The protection offered to the driver head and chest was poor and for this reason the star capping was applied. Passenger’s chest protection was marginal. The passengers’ knees could impact with dangerous structures in the dashboard lie the Tran fascia tube. The bodyshell was rated as unstable. The body-shell was not capable of withstanding further loading.”
