New Delhi: Rashtrapati Bhawan has filed a complaint with Delhi Police in connection with alleged derogatory tweets by former IPL boss Lalit Modi, being probed by the Enforcement Directorate for alleged money laundering, against President Pranab Mukherjee’s Secretary Omita Paul. The formal complaint was sent by Rashtrapati Bhavan along with tweets posted by Lalit Modi last month. A final call on the complaint will be taken by DelhiPolice Commissioner B S Bassi, who may seek legal opinion on whether the tweets amounted to criminal defamation. Since the Supreme Court had recently scrapped section 66A of the Information Technology Act relating to criminal defamation, the police would have to look at provisions that could be applied against Modi in this case. On 23 June, Modi tweeted the following-
3/3 the biggest hawala operator is #vivek #nagpal also best known as #omita #pauls #bagman. Lots of data on him. Does anyone care to

4/3 investigate him no. Why? He has friends in the highest places. Media is blind most times. Follow my lead and see. Find the bank and FM

At the time, the President’s office had issued a statement labelling Lalit Modi’s 23 June tweets as “baseless, tendentious and malicious”. PTI
