Delhi protests: 3000 police personnel deployed to control crowd

New Delhi: At least 3,000 security personnel, from Delhi Police and para-military forces, were manning roads in the heart of the capital to stop any violent demonstration, said a senior police officer on Thursday. The officer said that to maintain peace in the capital, the force was put on every crossing leading to India Gate. AFP.[/caption] Around 2,000 personnel of the Delhi Police and para-military forces were deputed at different locations in central Delhi area - especially at India Gate, Jantar Mantar, Zakir Hussain Marg and the entry points from Mathura Road. “Senior officers of the capital’s six districts, including additional commissioners and deputy commissioners, and two joint commissioners were also present at Zakir Hussain Marg along with around 1,000 policemen to stop hundreds of protesters heading towards India Gate Thursday,” said the officer. The officer also informed that in the wake of a huge protest, which was organised by some women organisations here Thursday afternoon, Zakir Hussain Marg was blocked with five separate levels of barricades. “The protesters, who started their march from Nizamuddin Thursday afternoon and planned to go up to India Gate, were stopped at Zakir Husain Marg around 200 meters away from India Gate because of restrictions on gatherings in New Delhi and central Delhi areas, except Jantar Mantar,” said the officer. “To maintain peace here in the city, we have been taking help of all the 11 districts of the capital and the policemen are being called from different police stations to depute in New Delhi and central Delhi area,” added the officer.
