The fact that Delhi is not the safest city for women is common knowledge. However, there’s more to Delhi and its women than is apparent. A recent study revealed that the percentage of women working in Delhi is far less than metros like Kolkata and Mumbai. AFP.[/caption] In fact, Kolkata and Mumbai has double the percentage of women going out to work than Delhi. Cities like Coimbatore and Bangalore lead the trends with most number of women going out to work, there. The Times of India reports that according to statistics released by the office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, Delhi lags behind other metros when it comes to the number of women going out to work. As with the NSSO data, the new Census data shows that while rural women participate in the workforce at double the rate of urban women, it is rural women who are being hit the hardest. A closer look at farm employment data shows that of the 8.9 million fewer farmers that India had in 2011 as against a decade ago, 5.9 million of those missing farmers were women.
In Delhi, the female participation in workforce in about 10.6 percent against male participation which stands at 53.1 percent. In Kolkata and Mumbai the female participation is pegged at around 18 percent. In Coimbatore and Bangalore, women’s participation in work force is about 25 percent.
