Delhi gangrape victim regains consciousness, next 48 hours critical

The 23-year-old victim of the brutal gangrape has reportedly regained consciousness at Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital where she is being treated for her injuries. NDTV reported that the girl is communicating with doctors and nurses by writing because she is till not in a position to talk. Despite the encouraging signs however, she is still in critical condition, and doctors say that the next 48 hours will be critical. She has intestinal damage after being repeatedly hit with a blunt object on her abdomen, and doctors say the extent of genital damage indicates that a blunt object was also probably shoved up her private parts. The Times of India reported that doctors had to remove large portions of her intestines as it was badly damaged. She was later put on a ventilator. Dr BD Athani, Medical Superintendent of the Safdarjung hospital told PTI that the victim will be kept under “close observation” by doctors for the next 48 to 72 hours as the nature of injuries inflicted on her are as such. Athani said doctors are reviewing her case periodically so that she gets best of the treatment. He said the girl’s conscious level is much better than a day before and that she is under continuous treatment. “We still cannot call her out of danger because of the nature of injuries,” he said. Doctors said the paramedical student has suffered severe injuries on her head and face as she was brutally attacked using an iron rod.
