Underworld don Chhota Rajan will be deported to India on Wednesday as the local airport was shut down because of volcanic ash in the atmosphere. Rajan was earlier expected to be deported on Tuesday night, reports PTI. The Indonesian police had given its nod, clearing the decks for his return home after more than two decades. An Indian Police team, which arrived in Bali on Sunday, completed all formalities for taking custody of Rajan and flying him to India, where he is one of the most wanted criminals. The Indian Express reports that 55-year-old Rajan will be taken in a special aircraft flown in from India. “It is expected that Rajan will be flown to India tonight,” Grand Commissioner of Police Herry Vianto told the newspaper. In an explosive claim, gangster Chhota Rajan told reporters that a few corrupt officials of the Mumbai police are colluding with wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, who is currently based in Pakistan. He also said that the Pakistan Army has enhanced the security after the arrest of Rajan in Indonesia. Rajan was arrested by the Indonesian police in Bali on 25 October. Speaking to reporters outside the prison in Bali’s Denpasar, Rajan said, “The Mumbai Police has done a lot of ‘atyachar’ (atrocities) on me…the government should look into that. Some in the Mumbai Police are mixed up with Dawood.”

“The Delhi government should do justice to me keeping that in mind. I am not scared of Dawood and I will continue fighting against him and terrorism,” Rajan added. PTI reported that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadavis has said that Rajan will be brought to Mumbai. Interpol officials and Denpasar’s Immigration chief questioned Chhota Rajan in Jakarta on Tuesday. Mumbai-born Rajan was once a close confidante of Dawood, the prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. They parted ways after the serial explosions, that claimed nearly 260 lives, after Rajan said he opposed the attack.

Meanwhile, a team of officials, who left for Bali on Monday, for the first time questioned Rajan. Officials believe that he could be deported to India in the next two-three days. Speaking to CNN-IBN, sources said that once brought back, Rajan will be handed over to the CBI and not Mumbai or Delhi Police. Rajan, who was arrested in this popular tourist town upon arrival from Australia on 25 October, is expected to be produced before a court soon where the Indonesian police will submit details of the cases for which he is wanted in India. Indian police team has been working with their Indonesian counterparts to take over Rajan’s custody as early as possible. “If the lawyer engaged by Rajan does not oppose his deportation to India, we will hand him over to the Indian police team which has come here. The entire process is likely to be completed in next two-three days,” an official said. However, if the lawyer opposes Rajan’s deportation to India, the process may get longer, the official said. Rajan has hired a lawyer, Fransico Prassar, who met him at the detention centre a few times. Chhota Rajan was arrested in Bali on the basis of a Red Corner Notice from Interpol and following a tip off by Australian authorities to the police in Indonesia. Rajan was travelling with the identity of Mohan Kumar with passport number G9273860 when he was apprehended at the airport here after arriving on a Garuda Indonesia flight GA715. Rajan, originally known as Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje, has been questioned by the Indonesian police several times in the last few days to confirm his identity and criminal acts in India.
