Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that India and Brazil share a similar stance on the global fight against terrorism, with both nations committed to “zero tolerance and zero double standards” on the issue.
Addressing a joint briefing alongside Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after their delegation-level talks, PM Modi said, “Our idea on the fight against terrorism is the same. Zero tolerance and zero double standards is our clear stand. We strongly oppose terror and the supporters of terrorism.”

PM Modi thanked President Lula for his solidarity and support in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April.
Highlighting the broader significance of India-Brazil ties, PM Modi said the two large democracies have long worked in close coordination on global issues and serve as pillars of stability amid worldwide uncertainty.

PM Modi also mentioned significant progress in energy and defence cooperation.

To increase cooperation in this field, today’s agreement will give a new momentum to our green goals,” he said, congratulating President Lula for hosting this year’s COP30 in Brazil.
He added, “Increasing defence cooperation is an indication of our deep mutual trust. We will continue with our efforts to bring together our defence industry.”
He concluded by inviting President Lula to visit India.
On his part, President Lula da Silva said his country aims to triple trade flows with India from $12 billion last year “in the short term,” without giving a more specific time frame.
Speaking alongside PM Modi, Lula also said Brazilian planemaker Embraer wants to strengthen its presence in India, partnering with companies there.
Lula also said that expanding a preferential trade agreement between India and South American bloc Mercosur could help reduce both tariff and non-tariff barriers that are limiting trade.
Earlier during the bilateral meeting, the two leaders held extensive discussions on multifaceted ties, including trade and investment, defence and security, health and pharmaceuticals, space, renewable energy, food and energy security, infrastructure development, digital public infrastructure, culture and people-to-people ties, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
They explored avenues for collaboration in the new areas of critical minerals, new and emerging technologies, AI & supercomputers, digital collaboration & mobility, he said, adding that they set a bilateral trade target of USD 20 billion over the next five years.
After the talks, the two sides inked agreements to bolster cooperation in several areas.
He was also conferred with Brazil’s highest civilian award, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross.
The honour was presented by President Lula da Silva, in recognition of PM Modi’s notable contributions to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing India-Brazil cooperation across key global platforms.
“Being honoured with Brazil’s highest national award by the President today is a moment of immense pride and emotion, not only for me, but also for 140 crore Indians,” PM Modi said during the joint press statement.
PM Modi, who arrived in Brasília for a State Visit after attending the Brics summit in Rio de Janeiro, said his trip to Brazil will add momentum to the bilateral relations.
Earlier, PM Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome featuring a unique 114-horse parade at the Alvorada Palace in Brasília. He also witnessed an Indian classical bhajan performance during his reception.
