Days after the disappearance of three Indians in Tehran, the Embassy of Iran in India has warned against getting duped by agents.

The Indian Embassy in Iran on Wednesday said that three Indians had gone missing in Iran and it had “strongly” taken up the issue with the Iranian authorities.

In a post on X, the Iranian Embassy on Thursday (May 29) said that “Indian citizens are strongly advised not to be deceived by the promises of unauthorised individuals or illegal Indian agencies offering travel to other countries”.

The embassy further said, “The case concerning the disappearance of three Indian nationals is being followed up by the Consular Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran in coordination with the relevant judicial authorities. The Embassy of the Republic of India in Tehran is also being kept informed of the proceedings within the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran through coordination with the Consular Affairs Department.”

While the embassy did not identify the missing Indians, NDTV reported that they are Hushanpreet Singh from Punjab’s Sangrur, Jaspal Singh from Punjab’s SBS Nagar, and Amritpal Singh from Punjab’s Hoshiarpur.

The report further said that they went missing on May 1 shortly after arriving in Iranian capital Tehran.

Separately, India Today has reported Hushanpreet’s mother as saying that her son was abducted in Iran. She said that he was duped by agents who took him to Iran after promising to take him to Australia on a work permit.

Once Hushanpreet arrived in Iran on what the agents said was a temporary stay, he was abducted, according to the mother.

The report further quoted the mother as saying that abductors sent pictures and videos of the three men that show their hands tied by ropes with cuts and bruises on their bodies. She further said that abductors have demanded ransom for their release.
