Chinese leader Xi Jinping has said that the India-China relationship should take the form of a “Dragon-Elephant tango”.
In a message to mark the 75th anniversary of the India-China diplomatic ties, Xi said that the two countries should find ways to coexist peacefully and that he was ready to deepen communication and coordination in major international affairs and jointly safeguard peace in border areas, according to Chinese Xinhua news agency.
Dragons and elephants are the respective emblematic animals of China and India. India and China are currently in the process of mending ties after Chinese aggression at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto India-China border, in eastern Ladakh in 2020 triggered a yearslong border stand-off that has not yet been fully resolved. The stand-off, which included fatal skirmishes, plunged the India-China relationship to its lowest point since 1962 when the two countries fought a war.
In his message to President Droupadi Murmu, Xi called upon both countries to view and handle bilateral relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective and seek a way that features peaceful coexistence, mutual trust, mutual benefit, and common development. He said that the two countries should get alon with each other and jointly promote a multipolar world and greater democracy in international relations.
Xi further said that he remains willing to mark the anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties as a moment to enhance strategic mutual trust, strengthen exchanges, and cooperation in various fields, according to Xinhua.
Even though India and China have full-fledged bilateral ties and Xi has spoken of expanding those ties, China continues to reject India’s sovereignty over various parts of the country. China continues to occupy parts of Ladakh and claims the part of the region with India as its own. China also claims Arunachal Pradesh as its own and has in recent years disputed the border in Sikkim as well.
