A recent financial declaration revealed that US Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate Tim Walz barely has any assets to his name. The declaration from January 2024 indicated that the Minnesota Governor owns no stocks, bonds or real estate. The filing stated that Walz’s salary as governor of Minnesota is $127,629.
The presumptive Democratic VP candidate for the 2024 US Presidential Elections was eligible for a raise last year to $149,550, but he chose not to accept it, CNBC reported. Together with his wife, his total net worth stands at $330,000, which is seen as the average net worth of many Americans.
In 2019, when the former school teacher was elected as the governor of the state, he and his wife sold their Mankato, Minnesota, home and moved into the governor’s mansion. The couple listed the house for $315,000, after buying it for $145,000, back in 1997.
Modest profile compared to others
Meanwhile, Walz’s Republican counterpart JD Vance is estimated to have a net worth between $3 million and $10 million, Forbes reported based on the Ohio senator’s publicly reported investments and cash. Former US President Donald Trump on the other hand is a billionaire thanks to his decades-old business empire.
In her financial declaration Democratic presidential nominee Harris listed securities investments personally owned worth between $800,000 and $1.75 million. She also listed personal cash holdings to be between $550,000 and $1.1 million.

Why Harris chose Walz
Several experts believed that Harris chose Walz over Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, was due to his “salt-of-the-earth background”. Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1981 and retired at the rank of master sergeant. After coming out of the army, he became a high school teacher and a football coach in Mankato.
After his stint as a teacher, he joined public service as a member of the US Congress back in 2006. As a Governor of Minnesota, Walz is known for promoting policies that are popular with the Democratic Party base, including universal school lunches and legalized marijuana consumption.
