Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Friday said that the Bangladesh issue ‘might come up’ when Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets US President Donald Trump next week.

PM Modi will fly down to the US on February 12 to meet Trump, the first such meeting between the two leaders in the latter’s second presidency.

“I can’t say if it (Bangladesh) will be discussed in Washington but it might come up,” Misri said during a press conference.

Bangladesh is once again on the boil after a mob vandalised its founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhaka.

In this regard, the foreign secretary said, “We would also like to point out that the safety of diplomatic premises is the responsibility of the host government, and I have no doubt that the Bangladesh authorities are fully aware of their responsibilities in this regard.”

The incident took place just a day after Hasina delivered an online speech urging Awami League supporters to protest against the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

The protesters arrived in bulldozers and threatened to demolish the house in the Dhanmondi 32 area. Ultimately, they opted not to bring it down but broke the main gate, vandalised the property, and set it ablaze.

The attackers said the house was a symbol of “authoritarianism and fascism” and vowed to remove traces of what they termed as ‘Mujibism’ in the country.
