A daring escape by a kangaroo being transported to a new home east of Toronto ended with a surprising turn of events, as the marsupial delivered a punch to one of the police officers involved in its capture. The incident occurred after the kangaroo hopped away from handlers during a rest stop at the Oshawa Zoo and Fun Farm in Ontario. The Kangaroo’s Weekend in the Wild The female kangaroo, born in captivity, roamed freely over the weekend, captivating onlookers and prompting videos to circulate on social media. The escape raised concerns about the safety of both the kangaroo and the public in Oshawa, a town on Lake Ontario. Kangaroo’s Capture and Resistance According to a report in The Guardian, officers on patrol located the kangaroo on a rural property in northern Oshawa around 3 am on Monday. Following instructions, they contacted the kangaroo’s handlers and attempted to capture it by the tail. However, the marsupial fought back, delivering a punch to one of the officers during the process. Staff sergeant Chris Boileau expressed that the unexpected encounter would likely leave a lasting memory for the officer involved. En Route to a New Home The kangaroo, en route to a zoo in Quebec, was provided with medical treatment following the capture. Despite its unexpected escapade, the decision was made to allow the kangaroo to rest at the Oshawa Zoo for a few days before continuing its journey. Cameron Preyde, the head keeper at the Oshawa Zoo and Fun Farm, explained the decision, stating, “We’re going to keep her here for a little while longer, let her rest up and make sure she is safe.” Kangaroo Defense Mechanisms Dr. George Wilson from the Australian National University’s college of science shed light on kangaroo behaviour. He noted that when confronted, kangaroos typically stand on their hind legs and may use their forearms to fend off perceived threats. While kicking is their primary defense mechanism, punching with the upper arms or forearms is not uncommon. Meanwhile, Wilson revealed that kangaroos, especially those from a zoo environment, are accustomed to human interaction and may assert themselves in various ways when feeling threatened. Kangaroo Is A Symbol Of Boxing In Australia Referring to the famous boxing kangaroo symbol of Australia, Wilson highlighted the animal’s ability to engage in physical confrontations. Kangaroos, known for their territorial nature, can cause significant damage with their powerful hind legs when they feel the need to protect themselves.
