The village was planned as a settlement for the coal miners who would work in William’s coal mines in the nearby areas. As a tribute to his birthplace, he named the place Patna. Local historian Donald Reid said, “More and more people here (in Scotland) are getting aware of the links between the Scottish Patna and the Indian city of Patna.” However, it still remains to be seen how many people from the Bihar capital know of their Scottish counterpart.
Unknown to many of us, Patna is also a Scottish village in East Ayrshire founded by William Fullarton who was born in the Indian city of Patna during the British rule.
