Caspian Sea is shrinking visibly, raising environmental and geopolitical concerns in the region
Ecologists and environmental activists in Kazakhstan are expressing significant concern over the shrinking of the Caspian Sea, a decline so pronounced it is reportedly visible to the naked eye, Al Jazeera says in a report. The rapid drop in water levels is primarily attributed to the effects of climate change, such as increased evaporation from rising temperatures, and human activities, including the damming and diversion of feeder rivers. This environmental crisis poses significant geopolitical and resource security risks for all five littoral states—Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and the West Asian nation of Iran—potentially reigniting disputes over maritime boundaries, fishing rights, and access to energy resources as the coastline recedes.
