An unidentified woman in the city of Inezgane in Morocco is sparking headlines across the world simply because of the way she dealt with a man who sexually harassed her on a street. Further, she did not shy away from letting passersby know that she had been harassed. The incident came to light because a store’s CCTV camera caught the altercation. The video shows a woman in a green kaftan bending over a motorcycle as she retrieves a bag and a man passing by takes the opportunity to pinch her butt. The woman’s reaction is immediate: she gives him a mighty shove that hurls him across the shop floor. There is no audio to accompany the visuals, since the footage is from a CCTV camera, but as the woman walks away, she gestures to her butt. It has been widely interpreted as her letting other passersby, who saw her push the man, know why she did it. 9News.com.au reports that according to the person who originally uploaded the video on LiveLeak, the harasser was knocked out cold when his head hit concrete and it was another two hours before he regained consciousness. Many of you may be of the opinion that violence is not the correct way to deal with street harassment. The woman should have gone to the police instead of taking the law into her hands. May we draw your attention to another incident that occurred at a market in Inezgane in June. Two women – aged 23 and 29 – were harassed by shopkeepers for wearing short skirts in public, according to The Guardian . The police then arrived and arrested the women, charging them with gross indecency as their outfit was what they called “too tight”. They were then put on trial as public indecency carries a two-year jail term. The unfairness of the incident caused a global furore; Amnesty International condemned the trial and petitions were launched in support of the women. Finally in July, a court acquitted both women of all charges. Here’s the CCTV footage of the woman KO’ing her harasser:
