Former US President Donald Trump has dubbed January 6, 2021, when his supporters attacked the US Capitol, as a “day of love”.
On January 6, 2021, mobs egged on by Trump attacked the US Capitol to hijack the certification of the 2020 presidential election’s result and unlawfully overturn it in Trump’s favour. At least five law enforcement personnel and one rioter were killed in the violence.
Speaking at a town hall hosted by Spanish-language network Univsion, Trump on Wednesday said it was a “day of love from the standpoint of millions” of people. As for the rally that fed the mobs that attacked the Capitol, Trump said “it could have been the largest group he has spoken to”.
Trump further said that his supporters attacked the Capitol as “they thought the election was a rigged election” and not because of him. He said there was “nothing done wrong at all” and that “strong action” was taken.
Trump also went to say that he “totally disagreed with him on what he did”.
It has since been learnt that even though Trump wanted Pence to stop the certification and overturn the election in his favour, Pence refused and said that his role did not allow any such thing and he could do nothing like that.
Following Trump’s comments, Sara Mathews, who resigned as the Deputy White House Press Secretary over Jan. 6 and Trump’s reaction to it, told CNN that the incident was the “tipping point”. She said that she kept hoping that Trump would take action but nothing happened. She said that Trump did nothing as “he was enjoying what he was seeing”.
