Sophia, a humanoid robot created by Hanson Robotics in Hong Kong, was given official status on Wednesday at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Saudi Arabia. Sophia, which looks like Audrey Hepburn and mimics human expressions, had earlier beat comedian Jimmy Fallon in a nationally televised game of rock-paper-scissors. Sophia’s recognition as a citizen made international headlines and sparked an outcry against a country that has been accused of making women second-class citizens. The robot simulation of a woman, according to critics, enjoys freedoms that women in Saudi Arabia do not. Sophia made her comments while not wearing a headscarf and she was unaccompanied by a male guardian. Both things are forbidden for women under Saudi law.
