WATCH: Sedan rams into Joe Biden's motorcade in Delaware; US President, First Lady safe

A speeding car crashed into a vehicle attached to US President Joe Biden’s motorcade in Delaware on Sunday. The collision occurred when Biden and First Lady Jill Biden had just left his campaign headquarters. Both POTUS and Jill Biden were safe following the incident, a report by AFP quoted a White House official as saying. According to the White House press pool report, Joe and Jill Biden had emerged from the Biden-Harris 2024 headquarters in rainy downtown Wilmington at 8:07 pm (0107 GMT) after having a meal with members of his re-election team at the time of the incident. The pool report further said, moments after Biden responded to a question from a reporter, a silver sedan with Delaware license plates hit what seemed to be a motorcade SUV shielding the motorcade at the intersection across from the entrance of the campaign headquarters.

A report by AP said after the sedan crashed into the motorcade, it tried to drive off into a closed-off intersection. However, the Secret Service and Biden’s personnel surrounded the vehicle with weapons and asked the driver to step out with his hands in the air. Meanwhile, Biden was rushed into a waiting vehicle and he was whisked away from the building in downtown Wilmington after a loud bang caused by sedan slamming into an SUV positioned in a nearby intersection about 40 metres from Biden was heard.

Joe and Jill were not seated in the vehicle with which the accident took place. While the First lady was waiting in a spare vehicle, the president watched the scene unfold and seemed shocked at the sight of the accident. Reporters, who were questioning Biden minutes ago, were also quickly rounded up by the staff to join the motorcade as it departed. “They’re evacuating, you guys gotta go,” a staffer told reporters as security personnel secured the area, according to AFP. Later, a photo was released showing the man who allegedly rammed into Biden’s motorcade in Delaware. In 2022, a small private aeroplane mistakenly entered restricted airspace near the US President’s Delaware vacation home, prompting a brief evacuation of Joe and Jill Biden. The Secret Service said the plane was immediately escorted from the restricted airspace after “mistakenly entering a secured area.” With inputs from agencies
