Eyewitnesses told reporters how the attack had unfolded in the school.

“We were studying and the fourth period was on when the firing began,” said a student who had managed to escape from the school.

“When the firing began, our teachers initially told us it was a drill. But then we heard heavy firing and we realised that seven to eight people had launched an attack on the school. The principal then told the teachers to escort the children out of the back gate. There are around a thousand students still in the auditorium,” said the child.

“As soon as the firing began, our teacher made us sit in a corner with our heads down. After about an hour, army officers entered the school compound and escorted us out,” said another student who had been rescued.

“But as we left the school, we saw the bodies of our friends lying on the floor in the corridors of the school,” said the student.

A teacher also said that around 800 students are present at the school. “Exams were underway in the school and many were in the examination hall,” said the teacher.
