In a horrific case of police brutality, a South Carolina police officer appears to body slam a black high school student and drag her across a classroom in video, NBC News reported .
The reason behind the incident is unclear and the video is currently unverified, but police told WIS that the girl did not comply with the officer’s directions.
The confrontation at Spring Valley High School in Columbia has drawn intense criticism on social media.
The video, which appears to have been taken on a fellow classmate’s mobile phone, shows a white male police officer manhandle a black female student who is sitting at her desk. He grabs the girl and flips her on her back while she is still seated. After dragging her across the floor, the officer says, “Hands behind your back—give me your hands.”
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott told WIS-TV that the school officer was responding to a student who was refusing to leave class.
“The student was told she was under arrest for disturbing school and given instructions, which she again refused,” Lott said. “The video then shows the student resisting and being arrested by the SRO,” he said
