A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday sent strong tremors as far as Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, causing panic among residents.

The shaking caused panic, with buildings swaying and water spilling from rooftop pools. Videos on social media captured the impact, showing cars rocking and people rushing onto the streets.

A viral video from Shanghai Daily on social media captured water cascading from a rooftop swimming pool of a high-rise building in Bangkok due to the impact of the quake. The tremors were so strong that water spilled out of rooftop pools as buildings swayed.

Another video from Shanghai Daily showed cars rocking on the road as the earthquake struck, while buildings across Myanmar sustained damage.

Witnesses also reported that buildings swayed, forcing hundreds of people to rush onto the streets.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicentre was 16 kilometres north-northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar. A 6.4-magnitude aftershock followed, further intensifying fears in the region. Authorities are assessing the situation, and no casualties have been reported so far.

Alarms rang out as the earthquake struck around 1:30 p.m., prompting residents to evacuate high-rise buildings in central Bangkok. People hurried down staircases of condominiums and hotels, gathering on the streets to escape the shaking. Many remained outside, seeking shade from the midday sun.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
