As per reports in Turkish outlet Turkiye Newspaper, it is understood the ambush strike could have been an assassination attempt. If the attack was indeed an attempt on the life of the president, it serves as evidence for increased infighting between Palestinian factions. Abbas holds the position of the Chair of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, or PLO, which governs the West Bank territory. The Palestine Authority president does not endorse the terrorist group Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip under siege. PLO lost control of the Gaza Strip to Hamas after elections in 2006. The West Bank, where Abbas’ convoy was attacked, is a Palestinian territory that is partially administered by PLO also known as the Palestinian Authority. Blinken on Sunday suggested the Palestinian Authority under President Mahmud Abbas should retake control of Gaza. The Palestinian Authority exercises limited autonomy in only parts of the West Bank. Abbas said it could only potentially return to power in Gaza when a “comprehensive political solution” is found for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With inputs from agencies
