Watch: A quick guide to a century of conflict in the Middle East

The history of the most oil rich region in the country, from the Ottoman empire to the Arab uprising, all cramped into a video that lasts less than 2 minutes. The video explains how the Middle East never gained the Arab independence it had always hoped for. After the Ottomans left, the French and British claimed their territories.

In an effort to overthrow the Europeans, the Arabs became increasingly separatist and that marked the beginning of tensions between different ethnic groups. Possibly one of the most volatile regions in the world right now, the Middle East crisis is now the poster child of war, destruction and despair.

With countries like Syria almost wiped out and stomped on, the crisis is only growing larger. Western powers interfering combined with Jihadist groups like Al-Qaeda and IS makes is only pushing Syria further into the shambles it once help create.
