Was it a saracastic comment over his fellow prisoner’s nationality and religion that resulted in the murderous assault on Pakistani inmate Sanaullah Ranjay? A report in the Hindu quotes unnamed prison officials as saying that the 64-year-old Sanaullah had just completed 14 years in jail on 3 May and was working as usual in the prison’s garden when fellow inmate Vinod Kumar approached him asking for a couple of bidis. PTI[/caption] While Kumar smoked a bidi, Sanaullah reportedly told him of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh’s death following a murderous assault in a Lahore jail but was allegedly warned by the former Indian army man, “Mera damaag mat khaau yaar subah subah (Don’t chew my brains in the morning) ” Sanaullah allegedly made a sarcastic comment about Kumar’s religion and country, which enraged the Indian prisoner to such an extent that he grabbed a brick lying nearby and beat him in the head with it multiple times. A former Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Sanuallah was arrested in 1999 and the court awarded him life term in 2009. The Pakistani prisoner, who was involved in bomb blasts in Jammu city, had also dug a tunnel with some other inmates to escape from Kot Balwal jail. He was taken to a hospital in Chandigarh but succumbed to his injuries. His body was taken to Pakistan where he was given a state funeral. with inputs from PTI
