Hong Kong’s New Territories experienced a voltage dip on New Year’s Day, leading to over a dozen residents being trapped in lifts and triggering fire alarms. CLP Power, the electricity company, issued an apology, attributing the incident to an equipment malfunction at one of its electrical substations. The malfunction activated protective devices, potentially causing the suspension of sensitive installations like lifts. The Fire Services Department received over 20 reports of lift entrapments between 3:13 pm and 3:55 pm in various areas. Firefighters carried out rescue operations following the incidents. A video online showed smoke emanating from the affected electrical substation in Tsing Yi. Despite the visible smoke, on-site investigations found no signs of fire. Nga Ying Chau Street in Tsing Yi has been cordoned off for safety. CLP Power clarified that the incident led to a temporary voltage dip, causing lights to flicker and some installations, particularly lifts, to be suspended. District councillor Lo Yuen-ting assured that the situation inside the facility is “under control,” minimizing the likelihood of a power outage. CLP Power expressed regret for the inconvenience and stated that their engineering staff is actively investigating the incident. This event echoes similar incidents in 2023, where voltage dips resulted in power outages and lift entrapments. In April, Hong Kong Island experienced a prolonged blackout, while in March, a supply glitch affected Kowloon and the New Territories, leaving over 100 residents stranded in lifts. Fire flashes were observed near Kowloon Peak during the same period. Investigations into the current incident are ongoing.
