The United States is set to deploy an additional 3,000 troops to its southern border with Mexico, increasing active-duty personnel to approximately 9,000, US Northern Command (NORTHCOM) announced on Saturday.
“Approximately 2,400 soldiers from elements of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), 4th Infantry Division” will be sent to the border, along with “approximately 500 soldiers from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade,” NORTHCOM said in a statement.
Earlier this month, Mexico began deploying the 10,000-strong border troop as promised to the US in exchange for deferring US President Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariff on exported goods.
Trump has long been threatening to impose a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico until they clamped down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border, in a move that would appear to violate a free-trade deal.
