The US Supreme Court has ruled that the Trump administration can continue immigration raids across Los Angeles, lifting a previous ban imposed by a federal judge that barred ICE agents from making stops without “reasonable suspicion”.
In a big win for US President Donald Trump, who has vowed to deport illegal “aliens” from America, the 6-3 decision will now allow agents to carry out raids against people based solely on their race, language or job.
In Monday’s ruling, Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh stated that the lower court had overstepped its authority by imposing a restraining order that overly limited the ability of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to stop or question individuals suspected of being in the country unlawfully.
“To be clear, apparent ethnicity alone cannot furnish reasonable suspicion. However, it can be a ‘relevant factor’ when considered along with other salient factors,” he said.
Dems hit back
Opponents immediately slammed Monday’s ruling, with California Governor Gavin Newsom saying it was a deliberate attempt to hurt the state and its diverse people.
“Trump’s hand-picked Supreme Court majority just became the Grand Marshal for a parade of racial terror in Los Angeles,” said Newsom.
“This isn’t about enforcing immigration laws — it’s about targeting Latinos and anyone who doesn’t look or sound like Stephen Miller’s idea of an American,” he said, referring to the architect of Trump’s immigration enforcement policy.
“Trump’s private police force now has a green light to come after your family — and every person is now a target.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the ruling as an “attack” on civil liberties.

Immigration raids launched in Chicago
Meanwhile, anti-immigration raids have been launched in Chicago, in Trump’s latest showdown against “illegal aliens.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announcement of “Operation Midway Blitz” comes after Trump repeatedly threatened to send National Guard troops into Illinois, sparring with the state’s governor, JB Pritzker, in social media posts in recent days.
“For years, Governor Pritzker and his fellow sanctuary politicians released Tren de Aragua gang members, rapists, kidnappers, and drug traffickers on Chicago’s streets – putting American lives at risk and making Chicago a magnet for criminals,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
