Several police officers have been shot in southern Virginia’s Pittsylvania County in the US, with law enforcement officials launching a massive response to the shooting.
A large police presence has been reported on Hampstead Drive, with several helicopters deployed to the area. Local traffic alert pages indicate that multiple officers may have been shot.
According to a report by The Associated Press, three sheriff’s deputies were shot at while executing warrants for brandishing a firearm and trespassing in southern Virginia.
Pittsylvania County Sheriff Michael W. Taylor has said that the police officers are “doing okay” after an hours-long standoff that ended peacefully, with the suspected shooter now in custody.
“All three are well. Of course they’re shaken up. And they’re going through the process now of trying to heal,” Taylor said, adding: “They’re OK.”
Photos and video from the scene showed a large number of parked police and emergency response vehicles.
U.S. Rep. John McGuire, who represents Virginia’s 5th congressional district, had earlier said in a post on X that his thoughts and prayers were with deputies and their families.
“We are closely following the situation and keeping everyone affected in our hearts during this difficult time,” McGuire wrote.
