As bipartisan pressure over the lapses that led to the attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump, Secret Service chief Kimberly Cheatle has resigned.
Cheatle resigned on Tuesday. She announced her resignation in an email to the Secret Service staff, according to The Associated Press.
Earlier in the day, the House of Representatives announced the formation of a bipartisan taskforce to investigate the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. The decision was taken as per a joint initiative of Republican Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of the Democratic Party.
Previously, Cheatle had appeared before the House Oversight Committee where she faced bipartisan ire over the lapses that led to the shooting of Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. During the hearing, she admitted the agency’s failure and took responsibility for the lapses.
