Colombo: A senior US official is visiting Sri Lanka this week to discuss how it plans to implement recommendations of a war commission on alleged abuses in the country’s civil war.

A State Department release says US Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake will meet government officials and civil society representatives to discuss the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission Action Plan.

Sri Lanka appointed the commission while under international pressure to investigate alleged abuses during the war, and the report was delivered last year.

The United Nations says at least 7,000 civilians were killed in the final months of the war against the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels. The quarter-century war ended in May 2009.
