The US has deployed commandos in Israel to help the country locate hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. A report by the New York Times has quoted Christopher P. Maier, an assistant secretary of defence saying, “We’re actively helping the Israelis to do a number of things.” He added that the main task of the commandos is to “identify hostages, including American hostages. It’s really our responsibility to do so.” Sources said that dozens of US Special Operations forces have been sent to Israel for the purpose in addition to the team that was already in the country. The report also says that apart from the US, several other countries have moved their respective special forces to Israel to help the country rescue hostages. Meanwhile, several wounded Palestinians might get treated in Egypt after several reports suggest that the southern border at Rafah crossing will open today. The border authority in Gaza has said that Egypt has agreed to let 81 of the severely wounded Palestinians inside the country for treatment. An Israeli strike in a densely populated Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza has left several dead and has caused catastrophic damage according to eyewitnesses in the region. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has claimed that the strike in the Jabalya refugee camp killed Hamas commander Ibrahim Biari who was one of the leaders involved in attacking Israel on October 7.
