US appeals court rejects Trump's push to dismiss Jan 6 violence case

A federal appeals court in the US has rejected a broad assertion of immunity for former President Donald Trump over the January 6 violence at the White House, where his supporters attempted to thwart the certification of his election loss to Joe Biden, The New York Times reported on Friday. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit rejected Trump’s broad assertions of presidential immunity, which he claimed shielded him from legal liability in lawsuits filed by Democratic lawmakers and police officers. However, the three-judge panel specified that Trump, the frontrunner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, can continue to contest the cases and attempt to demonstrate that his actions were carried out in his official capacity as president as the legal proceedings unfold. Trump has contended that he cannot be sued over the Capitol riot, which resulted in numerous injuries to police officers. He argued that his statements during a rally before the Capitol was stormed addressed “matters of public concern” and fell within the bounds of absolute presidential immunity.
