 "US & Russia to hold talks on Ukraine war over weekend in Miami, says White House")
US and Russian officials will meet this weekend to discuss President Donald Trump’s latest plan to end the war in Ukraine, according to the White House.
A White House official told AFP that the meeting will take place in Florida’s Miami.
While the official did not go into details, Politico separately reported that the US delegation is expected to be led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, and the Russian delegation is expected to be led by Kirill Dmitriev, Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s envoy.
The talks will take place after days of intensive talks between the Trump administration, Ukraine, and Ukraine's European partners, which were aimed at turning Trump’s proposal into an acceptable arrangement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the final proposal will be finalised within days and submitted to Russia.
As per reports, Trump has offered Ukraine Nato-like security guarantees, but there has not been any understanding so far on the question of land. While Trump has pressed Ukraine to surrender the entire Donbas region in the country’s east to Russia as per Putin’s maximalist demands, Ukraine has pushed back and offered to freeze battle lines in any agreement.
Despite such progress, Zelenskyy has warned that Russia was preparing for a “new year of war”. The statement came amid signs that Putin could reject Trump’s proposal. For one, he has already rejected any ceasefire for Christmas.
