A man is dead and three police officers are hospitalized following a shooting Wednesday afternoon in an industrial area of Lorain, Ohio.
According to Elyria Police Chief James Welsh, officers from the Lorain Police Department were on proactive patrol when they encountered a man at the dead end of River Bend Drive around 1 pm Gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Two officers were seriously injured and airlifted to a trauma center in the Cleveland area. A third officer was taken to a local hospital, Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley told the Associated Press.
“This was an ambush situation,” Chief Welsh said. “It’s a difficult day for the Lorain Police Department and the entire law enforcement community.”
Mayor Bradley added that counseling would be offered to officers affected by the shooting. “We’re concerned for the safety of all our officers and citizens,” he said.
