Former US President Donald Trump threatened to prosecute Google if he wins the upcoming US Presidential Elections. In his latest instance of threatening prosecution, Trump claimed that the tech giant had been “illegally” showing only “bad stories” about him and only “good” ones for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump’s latest warning came just weeks after he called for the prosecution of lawyers, political donors and operatives if they engage in “unscrupulous behaviour.” On Friday, the former president launched a scathing attack against Google on his social media platform TruthSocial.
“It has been determined that Google has illegally used a system of only revealing and displaying bad stories about Donald J. Trump, some made up for this purpose while, at the same time, only revealing good stories about Comrade Kamala Harris,” Trump wrote in this post.
“This is an ILLEGAL ACTIVITY, and hopefully the Justice Department will criminally prosecute them for this blatant Interference of Elections,” he added. “If not, and subject to the Laws of our Country, I will request their prosecution, at the maximum levels, when I win the Election, and become President of the United States!” he added.
Google reacts
Following Trump’s accusations, Google made it clear that it did not manipulate the search results in favour of any candidates. “Both campaign websites consistently appear at the top of search for relevant and common search queries,” a Google spokesman said. In the past, Conservatives have claimed that in the past, Google’s algorithm was favouring the Democrats.
The Media Research Center, a group that works to counter what it claims is the “leftist bias of the national news media,” issued studies in the past, hinting that Google search aids Democrats. However, the search engine disputed all the reports and accusations, insisting that its search does not favour one party over another.
Trump made the post shortly before Harris arrived at the Southern border as US President Joe Biden’s government continues to face criticism over the border crisis.
It is pertinent to note that the former reality TV star’s attack against Google came just days after Trump suggested that former US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi should be prosecuted in connection with the security lapses by which a mob of his own supporters attacked the Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.
Meanwhile, on Friday, he said that an attorney general “somewhere, like in a Republican territory” should investigate Pelosi and her husband amid reports that the couple sold Visa stock ahead of the Justice Department’s filing an antitrust lawsuit against the company.
