Trump revokes Kamala Harris's Secret Service cover Biden had extended in a secret order

US President Donald Trump has revoked Kamala Harris’s extended Secret Service protection, according to a CNN report, citing a letter.

Under federal law, former vice presidents are entitled to Secret Service protection for six months after leaving office. That period for Harris ended on July 21.

However, her protection had been quietly extended for an additional year through a directive signed by then-President Joe Biden shortly before he left office, added the CNN report, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter. The extension had not been made public until now.

Trump’s cancellation of the extension was outlined in a letter titled ;Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security’, dated Thursday.

“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” CNN quoted the letter as saying.

The decision to revoke Harris’ Secret Service protection came directly from the White House and was not based on any new threat assessment or security review, a Secret Service official told CNN.

Agency leadership raised no objections, the source said, noting Harris’s security detail typically ranged from a dozen to several dozen agents, depending on her schedule.

The move comes just weeks before Harris is set to launch a multi-city book tour for her upcoming memoir 107 Days, releasing September 23 — her most high-profile public engagement since leaving office.

“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” CNN quoted Kirsten Allen, a Harris senior adviser, as saying.

While presidents and presidential candidates often face frequent threats — including two assassination attempts on Donald Trump during last year’s campaign — Kamala Harris has long drawn elevated security concerns as the first woman and first Black woman to serve as vice president.

According to the CNN report, citing sources familiar with her security detail, the threat level remained high even after the 2024 campaign, prompting President Biden to quietly extend her protection beyond the standard six-month post-office period.

His office has declined to comment on that decision.

With Trump now revoking the extension, Harris will lose not only round-the-clock physical protection but also key threat monitoring services.

Secret Service coverage includes real-time analysis of digital and physical threats, which her aides say is critical — especially as she prepares for a national book tour. Her Los Angeles home will also no longer be secured by federal agents, added the report.

Mounting similar private security could cost millions annually. Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, lost his own Secret Service detail on July 21 under standard provisions.
