US President-elect Donald Trump has picked China hawk Mike Waltz as his National Security Advisor (NSA), according to reports.
Waltz is currently a member of the House of Representatives from Florida. He is a former Green Beret commando.
In the Congress, Waltz has served in key House Armed Services, Intelligence, and Foreign Affairs committees. His wife Julia Nesheiwat was homeland security adviser during the first Trump administration (2017-21).
In addition to being hawkish on China, Waltz is also a proponent of a deeper relationship with India. In 2023, he went on the say that the United States should formalise the alliance with India.
As the NSA, Waltz would play a key role in the national security and foreign policy of the incoming Trump administration. The role takes increased prominence as two wars are raging in Europe and Middle East and Trump has said he would end them soon after assuming office.
