In the latest addition to his incoming administration, US President-elect Donald Trump named Brooke Rollins as the Secretary of Agriculture. Rollins is the President of America First Policy Institute. Trump confirmed his appointment in a statement on Saturday. The announcement came a day after the Republican leader went on a Friday flurry and filled the top positions in the health department along with picking the Treasury and Labour Secretary.
“As our next Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke will spearhead the effort to protect American Farmers, who are truly the backbone of our Country,” the president-elect said in a statement. Trump’s nomination of Rollins marks the completion of his top cabinet picks as he gears up to assume the office next year.
If Rollins gets a nod from the Senate, she would lead 100,000 employees working in the department. She will be responsible for working on farm and nutrition programs, forestry, home and farm lending, food safety, rural development, agricultural research, trade and more. Rollins will have to work with the $437.2 billion budget the Department has been allocated for the year 2024.
Rollins expressed gratitude
The officials and staff of the Department of Agriculture are usually responsible for negotiating trade deals, guiding dietary recommendations, inspecting meat, fighting wildfires and supporting rural broadband, among other activities. “Brooke’s commitment to supporting the American Farmer, defence of American Food Self-Sufficiency, and the restoration of Agriculture-dependent American Small Towns is second to none,” Trump in the Saturday statement.
In response to this, Rollins took to X, formerly known as Twitter to express gratitude to the president-elect. “Thank you, Mr. President, for the opportunity to serve as the next U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. It will be the honour of my life to fight for America’s farmers and our Nation’s agricultural communities. This is big stuff for a small-town ag girl from Glen Rose, TX — truly the American Dream at its greatest," she wrote.

It is pertinent to note that the America First Policy Institute, which is led by Rollins is a right-leaning think tank whose personnel have worked closely with Trump’s campaign. Rollins also chaired the Domestic Policy Council during Trump’s first term.
