Six people were injured after a man with an “altered mental state” went on a stabbing spree in the Washington DC neighbourhood on Thursday. According to ABC News, the officials are yet to determine the substance the man was on as he committed the heinous crime. The suspect, who also stabbed himself in the incident, was taken into custody, police said.
As per the report, the authorities were alerted at around 3:22 pm (local time) on Thursday. The man went on a stabbing spree in the area of Montello Avenue and Meigs Place NE, in the Trinidad neighbourhood, police said. “Officers arrived on scene in less than a minute and located numerous people suffering from stab wounds,” DC Chief Pamela Smith said during a press briefing.
The preliminary report suggested that the suspect began stabbing himself while walking down the street before stabbing a female acquaintance who was with him. He then went on to stab others who were outside on the block. Two people who tried to take the knife away from him also got stabbed in the process.
Injured victims transferred to nearby hospitals
Four women and two men injured in the incident were transported to the nearby hospitals. Smith described the attack “as a result of a senseless assault”. The four victims of the attack included a grandmother and her two granddaughters. The authorities noted that the victims are in stable condition and their injuries are not to be life-threatening.
During the presser, Smith noted that the police located the suspect on the ground. A knife, which police believe was used in the assault, was recovered a few feet from him. The suspect, whose name was not released, was also transported to the hospital and is in surgery, ABC News reported
“This incident highlights the need for assistance of substance abuse issues in our communities,” Smith told local reporters. “Even though we’re grateful for their intervention, we would ask that individuals who see incidents such as this not intervene because these two individuals, although good Samaritans, were also stabbed as part of this assault,” she added.
