US Vice President Kamala Harris has won all 4 electorates in the state of Rhode Island, according to the projection from The Associated Press. Harris won the state with 53.3 per cent of votes.
The state of Rhode Island was the last among the 13 colonies to ratify the Constitution of the United States, entering the Union in May 1790. Since then, the state has been participating in every single US Presidential Election. The state has been reliably voting for the Democrats since 1928, only voting for the Republicans twice in that era.
However, the political significance of the Ocean State is quite less since it only has four electoral votes. The electorate remained unchanged since the state first participated in 1792, except for the 1910s and 1920s when it had five electoral votes. However, the state still has the most electoral votes proportional to size - one for every 303 square miles.
Who are the voters?
According to the latest data published by Rhode Island’s Secretary of State Gregg Amore, as of July 2026, there are 779,607 total registered voters in the state. However, not everyone is an active voter. Of 723,135 total active voters, 51,686 have inactive voter registrations. As per the SOS website, 97 per cent of Rhode Island voters have an active status. In regards to the party affiliation, 38 per cent or 278,374 voters are registered as Democrats in Rhode Island. Meanwhile, only 14% or 103,216 voters are registered as Republicans in the state. Here’s a look at what the Ocean State’s demography looks like.
ETHNICITY | VOTE SHARE |
---|---|
White | 84% |
Black | 6.2% |
Asians | 2.6% |
Latino | 11.6% |
Native Americans | 0% |
Pacific Islander | 0% |
Is it Democrat or Republican?
As mentioned before the state has mostly remained a Democratic Party stronghold for decades. So much so that in the 90s it only voted once for a Republican candidate. The three top offices in the state are held by Democrats, including; Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Senator Jack Reed and Governor Daniel McKee. Even the only two congressional districts of the state are led by Democratic representatives.
Is it a swing state?
The state of Rhode Island has been historically a Democratic stronghold and only voted four times for Republican candidates ever since it started participating in the elections. The state voted twice for Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956, for Nixon in 1972, and for Reagan in 1984, when he won every state except Minnesota. With the 2024 US Presidential Election in mind, it is pertinent to note that former US President Donald Trump has never won in the state.
Has it given the US a president?
Interestingly, no US President has been born in the state of Rhode Island as of now.
