Oklahoma, located in the South Central region of the United States, ranks as the 20th-largest state by area and the 28th most populous among the 50 states. Its residents, known as Oklahomans, call Oklahoma City their capital and largest city. The name “Oklahoma” originates from the Choctaw words “okla,” meaning ‘people,’ and “humma,” meaning ‘red.’ Informally referred to as “The Sooner State,” this nickname pays homage to the Sooners —settlers who claimed land in territories previously owned by American Indians, following the Land Rush of 1889.

Who are the voters?

Approximately 70% of voters are White (non-Hispanic), while around 9% are Black or African American. Hispanic or Latino voters make up about 10%, and Native Americans account for roughly 7%. Asian voters represent about 2%, with other races comprising approximately 2%.

Is it Democrat or Republican?

Oklahoma is predominantly a Republican state. So far as presidential elections are concerned, in the 2020 election, Donald Trump won Oklahoma with approximately 65% of the vote, while Joe Biden received about 33%. Similarly, in 2016, Trump again secured the state with around 65% against Hillary Clinton’s 29%. In 2012, Mitt Romney claimed victory with approximately 60% of the votes, while Barack Obama garnered around 34%. Even in 2008, despite Obama performing relatively better, John McCain won with about 65% to Obama’s 34%. Republican candidates also have consistently won a majority of statewide offices, including the governorship and both US Senate seats. While there are Democratic voters and officials in the state, the Republican Party has dominated in both local and national elections, especially in the last couple of decades.

Is it a swing state?

Oklahoma is not considered a swing state. It has consistently leaned Republican in recent presidential elections, with Republican candidates winning by significant margins. While there may be some competitive local races, the state’s overall voting pattern has favored the Republican Party for many years. This trend makes Oklahoma more of a solidly red state rather than a swing state.

Has it given the US a president?

Oklahoma gave the US one president. William Howard Taft served as the 27th president from 1909 to 1913. Taft was born in Ohio but had strong connections to Oklahoma, particularly through his involvement in its early statehood and development. While not born in the state, his presidency is often noted in discussions about Oklahoma’s historical significance.
