Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of US President-elect Donald Trump, said on Saturday that she is withdrawing her name from consideration to replace outgoing US Senator Marco Rubio. The senate seat will soon be vacant after Rubio takes over as the US Secretary of State under the upcoming Trump administration.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is tasked to pick a replacement for Rubio, who will resign from the Senate office after Trump takes over. Speculations were rife that Lara would take over the role after Rubio’s exit. She served as the co-chair of the Republican National Committee in the lead-up to the 2024 election, playing an integral role in Trump’s victory.
Lara bids Adieu
While sharing a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Lara announced that she has decided to remove herself from the consideration “after an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many”.
“I could not have been more honoured to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime and I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida,” she wrote.
Lara is married to Eric Trump, the president-elect’s second son. In the post, she mentioned that she had a “big announcement” to share in January.
However, she did not provide much details regarding this. Lara maintained that she will continue to stay passionate about public service and looks forward to serving in the future. Lara’s withdrawal came a month after DeSantis said that he would make the selection by early January. With Lara out of the picture, it’s unclear who will take over Rubio’s seat.
