In a major blow to former US President Donald Trump’s bid to the White House, the Vice President and Democratic Presidential nominee has gained a 2-point lead in a head-to-head matchup against her Republican rival. Why the figure can be concerning for the Trump campaign because it was published in the latest polls conducted by Fox News, which is touted to lean towards the former president.
The polls conducted by the American news outlet indicated that more voters see Harris as the candidate who will help the middle class, and Hispanics and independents are expected to swing in her direction. The Fox News national survey found a 3 percentage-point shift among registered voters in the 2024 presidential contest since mid-August.
Trump loses his advantage
In the survey conducted in August, the former President had a 1-point advantage. However, in the latest poll, Harris is ahead by 2 points with 50 per cent of the respondents favour her while Trump got support from only 48 per cent of the participants.
In July, the Fox News survey gave a one-point lead to Trump in his match-up against US President Joe Biden. This also marked the first time Harris garnered 50 per cent support in a Fox News poll which came after the first intense presidential debate between the two candidates.
However, the news outlet warned that the Harris campaign should not start celebrating the polls. Back in 2016, then-Democratic presidential nominee and former First Lady, Hillary Clinton had a 2-point popular vote margin over Trump. However, she lost the Electoral College by 304-227. Meanwhile, Biden’s 4-point popular vote win in 2020 translated to a 306-232 Electoral College victory.
Harris gains support from Hispanics
The Fox News survey indicated that the biggest change in the voting behaviour witnessed since last month is the fact that independents and Hispanics have swung Harris’ way. In August, Hispanics favoured Trump by 6 points. But in the latest survey, the electorate went for Harris by a whopping 12-point margin.
Impact Shorts
More ShortsIndependents went for Trump by 8 points last month, but now prefer Harris by 12 as well. Trump retained the lead among non-college White men, rural voters and men. Harris’ backing, on the other hand, came from Black voters, urban voters, those under age 30, voters 65 and over, college graduates and women. She’s narrowly ahead in union households, a group that Biden won by low double-digits.
Overall, the survey indicated excitement among the voters. Roughly 7 in 10 Harris and Trump supporters say they are “extremely” motivated to vote in this year’s presidential race. More voters also think Harris (53 per cent) has the temperament to serve effectively as president than Trump (47 per cent). Hence, it will be interesting to see how the race will eventually turn out.
