Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris was taking lead over Republican Donald Trump in the swing state of Pennsylvania in the early trends of the 2024 US Presidential election.

Considered to be one of the most crucial among the seven swing states, Pennsylvania could decide the outcome of the race to the White House.

The seven key swing states include – Michigan, Wisconsin Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona, North Carolina and Georgia.

About 8 per cent of the expected votes have been counted in which Harris has secured a 71 per cent majority. The state holds 19 electoral votes.

In Pennsylvania, Harris voters were more likely than Trump’s to say they were motivated to vote against their candidate’s opponent.

According to Associated Press, in an expansive survey of more than 4,000 voters in the state, about 3 in 10 Harris voters in Pennsylvania said they were mainly casting their vote to oppose Trump.

The earliest results included mailed ballots, which have historically favored Democratic candidates. But the gap is expected to narrow, with Election Day votes from across the state being added.

Why Pennsylvania election result matters?

Pennsylvania is the fifth-most populous state and is the largest among the seven key swing states and boasts of holding as many as 19 crucial electoral votes.

Both Harris and Trump are making endless efforts to secure this battleground, highlighting the significance it holds in the race to the White House.

In the 2020 US presidential election, Joe Biden secured the swing state of Pennsylvania with 50 per cent votes, while his rival Trump bagged 48.8 per cent votes.

At least 270 of the 538 votes of the electoral college are required for a candidate to win the US Presidential election.

Interestingly, a candidate can emerge victorious despite losing in the popular vote as the official winner is only announced after electoral votes are considered.
