With just less than a month left for the upcoming US Presidential elections, the country’s Vice President Kamala Harris took potshots at her Republican rival over the latter’s age. While addressing a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Friday, Harris questioned Trump’s “stamina” and whether he is fit to do the job.
Harris made the remarks as she commented on reports that Trump had been cancelling media interviews. “If he can’t handle the rigours of the campaign trail, is he fit to do the job?” the Democratic presidential nominee told rallygoers. The 78-year-old former president has been notorious for taking aim at the age and mental acuity of the current US President Joe Biden, who had to drop out of the race amid internal pressure. “Trump is unfit for office," she remarked, which was followed by a thunderous applause from the audience.
Harris and her Republican opponent held a duelling rally in Michigan as they tried to shore up a crucial battleground state. Several polls suggest Michigan as well as its fellow “blue wall” states of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin remained in play for both candidates as the campaign’s waning days arrived.
Trump responds
Meanwhile, while addressing his own rally in the same state, Trump denied reports that he is “exhausted and cancelling events. “What event did I cancel,” Trump said.
“I haven’t cancelled. She doesn’t go to any events. She’s a loser. She didn’t even show up for the Catholics last night at the hotel. It was insulting. All they are is soundbites,” he added. The business-mogul-turned politician pointed out that he has gone 48 days without rest. “Tell me when you’ve seen me take even a little bit of a rest," the former president remarked.
It is important to note that Harris is not the only one who took potshots at Trump’s age. Former President Barack Obama went on to cast Trump as a huckster who lacks the mental fitness to lead the nation. “You would be worried if your grandpa was acting like this,” Obama said of Trump’s bizarre town hall appearance this week in which he stopped taking questions and instead swayed to music onstage for more than half an hour. “Tucson, we do not need to see what an older, loonier Donald Trump looks like with no guardrails," he added.
